Britney Spears is making her magazine rounds, and she wants everyone to know she's BACK! And what better way to show that than to share a magazine cover with Madonna! Brit and her idol share a flip cover for the April 2010 OUT magazine!

Madonna's cover shot was taken by photog Richard Corman back in 1982, a year before the Material Girl launched to super star status.

In the issue which celebrates "Ladies We Love," Richard tells the story of meeting Madonna, sharing that the icon served him "a cup of coffee on a silver tray with three pieces of Bazooka bubblegum," via Just Jared.

In just 36 hours, Zynga raised $1 million in its partnership with Save the Children, and has used its mighty PR skills to spread the word. The creator of FarmVille has several promotions across six of its games, and looks to Twitter to get that number to $2 million in donations. More specifically, the company has projected a single tweet through celebrities' Twitter feeds including Britney Spears, Ashton Kutcher, Nicki Minaj, Enrique Iglesias, John Legend, Questlove and Matisyahu. With these Twitter stars alone, the company has reached tens of millions of players and, more importantly, the uninitiated. With massive celebrity support like this, Zynga will nab $2 million in donations in no time at all.

We've rounded up the early reviews of Britney Spears' soon-to-be-officially-released Femme Fatale and also did up a By The Numbers list detailing some interesting facts about references made on the album, but there is still the deluxe edition and its four bonus tracks to look forward to. Today a snippet of one such song, "Selfish," has made its way online. Hear it below.

"Okay you think you got me where you want me, I'ma show you tonight / that I'm a girl and you're a boy and tonight you're gonna be my, be my man," Britney coos on Stargate/Sandy Vee co-production "Selfish."

Surely you didn't think Her Spearship was going to stray too far from her eternal themes of wild feet-touching-the-chandelier sex and love (emphasis on the former)?

Granted, this is only 40-or-so seconds of the song, but we're totally scratching our heads in wonderment at how this seemingly Grade A jam was relegated to being a bonus track?

Stargate, of course, has racked up a tasty plateful of hits over the past year, including Rihanna's "(Only Girl) In The World" and "What's My Name," Katy Perry's "Firework" and Wiz Khalifa's "Black And Yellow."

Britney Spears' upcoming free performance in San Francisco's Castro District has some local residents fretting that it will ruin their entire day.

Spears' March 27 performance will be in support of her upcoming album, Femme Fatale, set for a March 25 release. ABC's "Good Morning America" plans to broadcast the show March 29.

But not everyone is happy Spears is blessing the Castro with a freebie performance. For them, the concert is nothing but one big hassle as the city reroutes Muni buses for the day and shuts down a section of Castro Street for 17 hours, according to Oakland TV station KTVU.

Then there's all that gear and equipment that will be trucked to the location that's sure to add to the traffic.

"Our business depends on people being able to get to us, so they probably won't be able to get to us that day," Terry Asten Bennett of Cliff's Variety told the television station while bemoaning the temporary lack of parking that's bound to result from the event.

However, not everyone is looking upon Spears' arrival as a dark day in the Castro. Mike Stone, president of Mollie Stone's Market that opened last week, thinks it's a good thing.

"Even if it hurts business, I think it will be more valuable to the area," Stone told KTVU.

Meanwhile, San Francisco residents are gearing up for a dose of free Britney March 27.

"It's going to be really good for the gay community, the Castro," said local Tony Miller. "Good for her career."

Britney Spears appeared on Ryan Seacrest's radio show on Friday morning to play the final version of her new single, "Till The World Ends," and the singer also promised a summer tour. When asked how she is feeling about Femme Fatale, which comes out on March 29, Spears said, "It's, I think, my best work yet. I actually listened to it on the way over here. It's definitely something that you want to work out to. It's definitely upbeat. Will.i.am is on the record, and I'm a dancer so it's definitely something I can work with. It's a really fun record."

During the interview, Spears also confirmed that she would be following up her 2009 Circus tour with a new trek in support of Femme Fatale. Manager Larry Rudolph added that the singer will be hitting the road in "early summer" in the U.S.

Before playing "Till The World Ends," the singer called the clubby/dance track her favorite on the new album. The new song hit iTunes on Friday, and the deluxe version of the album is now available for pre-order. The full tracklisting of Femme Fatale is as follows:

As you may have heard, Britney Spears' former bodyguard, Fernando Flores unleashed some news on us recently that he has some rather provocative photos of the singer.

Last year, the former bodyguard fired up a sexual harassment lawsuit against Britney — and since it was thrown out for lack of evidence. Now, we're left wondering exactly why he didn't bring up these nude photos of Britney when it would benefit him the most?!?

Certainly, he claims that he had the pictures from her cell phone way back in the day when he worked for her. So why didn't he present these photos as evidence while the case was still active? That's what we want to know!

Why is he coming forward now unless it's merely an attempt to ruin her reputation?!?? What do you think?

Spears wants one more tryst with her ex on the Femme Fatale song.

Last month, Britney Spears teased a snippet of her Femme Fatale track "Inside Out." Now, a bit more of the sexy track, including some of the song's reported lyrics, has hit the Net.

In the new 30-second teaser for the song, posted on MuuMuse.com, fans are given a taste of not only part of the chorus, but also part of one of the song's bridges, which features a booming mid-tempo beat. Spears, in her signature style, sings, "You touch me and it's breaking me down/ and me down, and me down, and me down/ I'm telling you, let's just give it up and get down/ and get down, and get down ..."

On the breakup track's chorus, she sings, "So come on/ Won't you give me something to remember?/ Baby shut your mouth and turn me inside out/ Even though we couldn't last forever, baby."

Other lyrics seem like a switched-up version of those previously released. Neither set of lyrics has been confirmed as the album version. "Said you're gonna be here in a minute/ Sitting in the mirror getting pretty/ Gotta look my best if we're gonna break up/ Gotta look my best if we're gonna break up," the reported lyrics read.

The lyrics go on, "I can hear you knocking at the front door/ And I know exactly what you came for/ Try to say goodbye but it's hot and heavy."

The previously reported lyrics were: "Said you're gonna be here in two minutes/ Sitting in the mirror getting ready/ Gotta look my best if I wanna break up/ Gotta look my best if I wanna break up/ I can hear you knocking at the back door/ And I know exactly what you're here for/ Trying to say goodbye but I'm not that ready."

Both of the parents showed up with their significant others (Jason Trawick and Victoria Prince, respectively.) But they reportedly made a conscious effort of not having to speak to each other.

"He and Britney didn't come near each other until the end of the game, and even then, they stayed separate and didn't talk," a source said. "Victoria [K-Fed's girlfriend] was sitting in the front row right next to Britney and Jason, but she kept to herself and talked to friends."

Sounds like their might be some parental favoring as well.

"When Jayden [their other son] saw Britney arrive, he raced over to her and she picked him up and gave him a big kiss. He wanted to sit with Britney and Jason," the source adds.

Ever wonder what Britney Spears orders during her frequent Starbucks runs?

During a Twitter Q&A with her fans on Thursday, the 29-year-old "Hold It Against Me" singer revealed her favorite drink from the popular coffeehouse.

"I love their strawberry frappuccino," Spears shared.

Other surprising revelations from the pop superstar? "I've always wanted to do trapeze," she wrote. "And run with the lions."

Silly trivia aside, Spears promised that she's outdone herself on her forthcoming album, Femme Fatale (in stores March 29).

"I would describe it as moody, edgy pop with A LOT of energy," she tweeted. "I co-wrote a couple of songs. I think it's some of the best work I have ever done."

As for any collaborations, "you'll just have to wait and see," Spears teased.

But music isn't the only thing the singer has on her mind. "I love to act and would love to be in a Todd Phillips or Judd Apatow movie," Spears, who made her big screen debut in 2002's Crossroads, told fans.

Britney Spears went back to her Kentwood, La., roots Saturday for a family fishing trip.

Joined by sons Sean, 5, and Jayden, 4, and her boyfriend Jason Trawick, Spears, 29, enjoyed a Sonic fast-food run before meeting up with her parents and sister, Jamie Lynn, who brought along daughter Maddie, 2.

"[Sean] was more interested in skateboarding but Jayden and Maddie were checking out the bait in a bucket that [Britney's dad] Jamie [Spears] was using and watching him fish," a source tells UsMagazine.com of the family's outing. "He was showing Jayden how to put the bait on the rod and how to cast off."

Spears' beau appeared to really hit it off with her dad -- but had trouble reeling in the big kahuna.

"Jason joined Jamie with a fishing pole. Jamie looked to be an expert and Jason was just having fun with it," says the source. "At one point, he had a fish on his line but couldn't reel it in."

Though she now makes her home in Los Angeles, Spears has always had an affinity for her childhood stomping grounds.

"I grew up in a really small town," she has said of life in Kentwood (pop. 2,656). "I'm a Southern girl and I'm used to cajun food and blues music. I love where I come from."

'There's a public Britney and there's a private Britney, and they're very different,' Larry Rudolph tells MTV News of Britney-on-Britney battle.

Even with the fashion, dancing and technology elements of Britney Spears' just-premiered video for "Hold It Against Me," the pop singer's one-on-one battle with herself seems to be the most talked-about scene.

Larry Rudolph, the pop princess' longtime manager, spoke to MTV News via Skype after the video premiere about the climactic fight sequence and further clarified earlier reports that indicated that Britney had used a body double for the clip's dance scenes.

"It was good," Rudolph said of the combat scene. "Of course, there was a body double in there that she was fighting most of the time, which is where some confusion came in. ... I heard some rumors that she used a body double. The reality is, she used a body double for the fight scene, 'cause it's all the fight herself."

So what does the epic battle scene mean to him? While he hopes fans draw their own conclusions, he shared his theories with MTV News.

"There are really two different Britneys," he said. "There's a public Britney and there's a private Britney, and they're very different. Maybe the world doesn't really know that, maybe those of us who do know her really well understand that, but there really are two different Britneys. Maybe at some times the two Britneys are at odds with each other; most of the time they're not. There's some of that going on. I think it's also about Britney just being strong and still on top after all these years. ... But there's a few different ways to look at it."

Britney's video for "Hold It Against Me" is going to stake her place as Queen of Pop. Brian Friedman, choreographer of "HIAM", talked to MTV about how this new video is on that next level shit.

"She's showing that you have to push it as an artist: that you can't just settle, that you can't be calm with your choreography, that you have to make a statement," Friedman tells MTV.com. "There's so many people out there competing in this world to be the queen of pop, and she's definitely claiming her throne."

"Artistically, this video I think surpasses a lot of her other videos. So many of her videos are iconic, though. You look at 'Toxic' and you look at 'Slave,' even 'Oops … I Did It Again': People are gonna remember those videos forever. [In] '… Baby One More Time,' she made school-girl outfits relevant and so popular."

"This video is artistically a masterpiece, and I don't think that Britney has pushed the envelope in this way ever in any of her videos."

The album's lead single, "Hold It Against Me," was quickly embraced by Spears' fans when it was released earlier this month. It has also found love in the DJ community, with multiple remixes of the track gaining buzz.

Spears has big promotional plans for this release, including "a major TV event to launch the album" and a TV campaign, which will feature a variety of spots before the LP hits stores. Looking beautiful in blue, Britney Spears was bridesmaid in her friend's wedding in Miami Saturday.

She and boyfriend Jason Trawick flew in Thursday to partake in the weekend wedding festivities of her assistant and close friend Brett Miller.

They bunked down in an oceanfront room at the Newport Beachside Hotel where members and friends of the wedding party were staying, a source tells PEOPLE, but she didn't make it to the kickoff event.

"During Thursday night's rehearsal dinner, Britney ditched the reception and ordered room service for herself, Jason and her bodyguard," the source tells PEOPLE. "They had spaghetti bolognese, turkey burgers, chicken noodle soup, a fruit plate and one turkey sandwich."

Leaving her parents and friends at the Sunny Isles hotel Friday, Spears and Trawick moved into the Frank Sinatra Suite at the Fontainebleau in Miami beach because the Newport hotel's "pool wasn't private" enough.

Their new digs were reportedly a $35 million penthouse that rents for $15,000 a night, is four bedrooms, has a kitchen, whirlpool, piano and a large balcony overlooking the ocean.

After a few hours shopping, Spears and Trawick headed back to the Newport for another wedding party. "At one point, during the early evening Jason took Britney's hand and twirled her to a cool Frank Sinatra sound," the source tells PEOPLE. "It was cute and romantic."

The couple left the party after Spears noticed that a group of kids spotted her in the ladies room, and headed for the Fontainebleau club LIV.

"Britney and Jason were dancing and laughing and having a great time at LIV," another source tells PEOPLE. "He was very sweet and affectionate with her. And she got very excited when her favorite songs came on."

Miller's wedding took place Saturday at Miami's Spanish Monastery where she married her sweetheart, Frank Lionetti.

Britney Spears fans will have to wait a little bit longer than Super Bowl Sunday before they see the video for her new single, "Hold It Against Me."
Despite an online report claming the pop star will debut the video in between the game and a special Sunday episode of "Glee," Britney's manager, Larry Rudolph, told Access Hollywood's Billy Bush that this is not true.

"Definitely not premiering Super Bowl Sunday!" Larry told Billy on Wednesday morning.

The latest Britney rumor comes on the heels of another online report that the pop princess was scheduled to perform at the upcoming Grammy Awards, which her rep also shot down.

According to Britney's Twitter, the video is still in the works.

"I'm so excited to see the 1st cut of the #HIAM video next week. I asked for more pics to send to you guys. Hopefully tmw…. – Brit," she Tweeted on Tuesday.

Britney Spears still-untitled LP is set to be released March 15, a label rep confirms to MTV News.

The 29-year-old pop princess' seventh studio album will feature tracks from super producers Max Martin and Dr. Luke, among others, along with three or four additional tracks.

Choreographer Brian Friedman recently teased what fans can expect from Brit's "Hold It Against Me" video.

"She's taking fashion risks. Things we've never seen her wear before she's wearing in this video, and I think it's just very sexy and it's a little bit playful," Brian told MTV News.

"She's going to be doing something in this video that we've never seen her do. I'm not gonna tell you what that is but she's going to be sweating and she's going to be getting bruised and battered," he added.

A few months ago I decided I wanted to buy a tablet computer. With $250 in my pocket to spend I searched the web looking for some. I wanted something that looked cool, could download books, had internet browsing, and was worth what I had. After a few days I narrowed it down to the Kindle, the Nook, and the Ipad.

I found that the Ipad had the most features (I later discovered that it even had a Kindle app) but the cheapest version coast $500 dollars and I didn't really want to spend that much.

So now I searched the web looking for Kindle Nook Comparison reviews. It was a long and hard process. The Nook has a Touch screen at the bottom and electronic ink for the main screen(10 days of battery). The Kindle has just an electronic ink screen with buttons at the bottom so it has better battery life.

They both have almost the exact same features but the Kindles' web browser works everywhere where there is cell phone service if you buy the 3g version, the Nooks' only works with wi-fi.

The Nook color is a good choice if you already have a wi-fi network at home. It doesn't have a 3g model so that is why I didn't buy it, plus it coast a lot more than the the Nook and Kindle. It has 6-10 hours of battery life.

The Nook is a great choice if you want to have a cheep e-reader with a small touch screen instead of a keypad like the Kindle. It has 10 days of battery life.

The Digital Songs and Billboard 200 charts couldn't look anymore different this week.

Sales at the top of the Billboard 200 continue to slide, as the No. 1-debuting set -- from a rather unlikely band -- sold 44,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Meanwhile, Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" makes a sizzling debut atop the Digital Songs chart with 411,000 sold.

Cake's "Showroom of Compassion" bows atop the Billboard 200 with just 44,000. That's not only the smallest frame for a No. 1 album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991 (beating a record set only last week), but it's also obviously the tiniest figure racked up by a No. 1-debuting album.

Who would have thought that Cake -- a band that many may only remember for its 1998 No. 1 Alternative Songs hit, "Never There" -- would notch not just its first top 10 album in 2011, but also its first No. 1?

Cage the Elephant's new "Thank You Happy Birthday" debuts in the No. 2 slot with 39,000, while last week's No. 1, Taylor Swift's "Speak Now," drops to No. 3 (35,000; down 32%). Country act Steel Magnolia is the third and final bow in the top 10, as its self-titled set starts at No. 7 (28,000).

As for the rest of the top 10, Bruno Mars' "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" falls 3-4 (32,000; down 15%), Nicki Minaj's "Pink Friday" slips 2-5 (32,000; down 17%), and the "Country Strong" soundtrack rises 10-6 (29,000; up less than 1%). Rihanna's "Loud" slides 6-8 (28,000; down 16%), Mumford & Sons' "Sigh No More" dips 8-9 (26,000; down 24%), and Kanye West's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" drops 7-10 (25,000; down 24%).

Over on the Digital Songs chart, things brighten up. The arrival of "Hold It Against Me" with an as-expected 411,000 downloads sold in its first week is not just Spears' best sales week for a digital song, but also the largest debut for a woman as a lead artist. It trumps the 325,000 that Swift's "Today Was a Fairytale" sold on the Feb. 6, 2010, chart.

This week, Spears leads two more top 10 bows: Avril Lavigne's "What the Hell" (No. 6 with 163,000) and West and Jay-Z's "H*A*M" (No. 10 with 125,000). The latter reached digital retailers one day later (Jan. 12) than the other two titles.

Last week's Digital Songs No. 1, Mars' "Grenade," falls to No. 2 (219,000; down 21%). Wiz Khalifa's "Black and Yellow" moves 4-3 (190,000; up 3%), Katy Perry's "Firework" slips 2-4 (184,000; down 20%), and Enrique Iglesias' "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)" slides 3-5 (182,000; down 5%). The Black Eyed Peas' "The Time (Dirty Bit)" falls 5-7 (157,000; down 13%), Lil Wayne's "6 Foot 7 Foot" declines 7-8 (146,000; down 10%), and Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" tumbles 6-9 (141,000; down 19%).

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Jan. 16) totaled 4.9 million units, down 11% compared with the sum last week (5.4 million) and down 15% compared with the comparable sales week of 2010 (5.7 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 10.3 million, an 11% drop compared with the same total at this point last year (11.6 million).

Digital track sales this past week totaled 27.5 million downloads, down 8% compared with last week (29.8 million) and 8% stacked next to the comparable week of 2010 (25.4 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 57.2 million, up 8% compared with the same total at this point last year (52.9 million).

Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2010 when: The live charity compilation "Hope for Haiti Now" debuted at No. 1 with 171,000, marking the first digital-only album to reach the top of the chart. The previous week's No. 1, Vampire Weekend's "Contra," fell to No. 6 with 43,000 (down 65%).

HIAM Debuts At #1 On BB Hot 100

Britney Spears becomes just the second artist in the Billboard Hot 100's 52-year history to debut multiple songs at No. 1, as "Hold It Against Me" blasts in at the summit.

Spears previously launched at the apex with "3" the week of Oct. 24, 2009. She joins Mariah Carey as the only acts to arrive at No. 1 more than once. Carey made such grand entrances with "Fantasy" and "One Sweet Day" in 1995 and "Honey" in 1997. (All charts will be refreshed tomorrow (Jan. 20) on Billboard.com).

"Hold It Against Me" is the 18th song to debut at No. 1 and the first since Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" the week of Nov. 13, 2010.

The track is Spears' fourth No. 1 on the Hot 100. Prior to "3," she reigned with her debut single "...Baby One More Time" (two weeks, 1999) and "Womanizer" (one week, 2008).

"Hold It Against Me" starts atop Digital Songs with 411,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. As previously reported, the sum marks the highest debut frame by a lead female artist, besting the 325,000 shifted by Taylor Swift's "Today Was a Fairytale" the week of Feb. 6, 2010.

On Radio Songs, "Hold It Against Me" begins at No. 23 with 45 million first-week audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS, the highest audience sum for a debuting title in the chart's history. The song's No. 23 entrance is the chart's best since Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body" began at the same rank the week of March 1, 2008.

Rapper confirms he's working with Britney..

Sometimes a rumor is so crazy, bizarre and puzzling that we have to engage with it. The most current one goes a little something like this: Britney Spears is recording a track with Atlanta trap rapper and purveyor of crazy facial tattoos Gucci Mane. This has to be a pipe dream, right? There's no way this could be real.

Well, Gucci's publicist, Kali Bowyer, says it is indeed happening. In an interview with XXL, she revealed that the word-hungry rapper has been recording with both Spears and former Destiny's Child sidekick Kelly Rowland. With legal problems still swirling around him and his associates, Gucci seems to be getting it in these days.

"We've been running around all day," Bowyer said. "We've been shooting a video. And then we'll be shooting another video with Kelly Rowland. Gucci's been working with Britney Spears. All while filming a reality TV show."

Apparently, Mr. Mane and Spears are tracking a remix to her current hit 'Hold It Against Me.' While we're not sure there is much crossover between the artists' fanbases, this could make for an interesting mix. When asked about why he would record with Spears, Gucci gave a response that's both simple and questionable.

"Britney's so icy," he said to Rumor Fix. "I'm going to make her go Brrr."

Britney Spears is well back on top already -- not that anyone was really doubting that it would happen -- and now the music video for her comeback single "Hold It Against Me," is in its final stages of production.

Described to PopWrap by an on-set source as, "a 21-century 'Rocky Horror,' space age fantasia of dance," the video sounds just about prefect. The first official photo from set was tweeted by Britney herself, to not only combat the fake photos circulating, but to keep our interest levels at full attention.

While Britney Spears's new single, "Hold It Against Me," may have provided an upbeat preview of her new album, what will the rest of the work sound like?

"It's way more edgy than the last album," songwriter Claude Kelly, who composed several tracks for the as-yet-untitled album, tells PEOPLE at a New York NARAS reception. He adds that Spears, 29, is returning to the grittier sounds of 2007's Blackout. "[It's] more in the vein of the album before," he says.

Though Kelly admits he's not completely sure what the "final product is going to be," he does say, "the last album [2008's Circus] was more clean pop. [Its purpose] was to reintroduce Britney to the world as the pop princess."

As the first single also indicates, Spears, who Tweeted from her "Hold It Against Me" video shoot this weekend, has new tunes are definitely club-worthy.

"She's always ready," Kelly says. "Dr. Luke and Max Martin are running the show, and it's all about the beats. It has a heavier bass line and it's much harder, more urgent, more club. She's ready again!"

Less than nine months after the singer's beau, Jason Trawick, stepped down as her agent last May, she has resigned with his company, William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, her rep confirms to UsMagazine.com.

But an insider stresses Trawick, 39, won't be the only person handling his gal's uber-busy career.

"Jason will be part of the team handling her career," a source tells Us. "He won't be the only agent working with her, he will handling acting endeavors, but there will be a big music department also on her account."

Behind the switch? "Jason is someone the family trusts, they know he will make the best decisions for her and she feels comfortable with him," explains the insider. "WME is absolutely the best choice for Britney. They are the best at what they do and her team recognize that."

Meanwhile the duo's nearly two-year personal relationship is going strong.

After the mother of two celebrated her 29th birthday with her man in Mexico in December, she told Us, "My birthday weekend away with Jason was amazing. Best birthday of my life!"

Britney Spears was photographed at McDonald's in Calabasas, California, on Saturday with her whole crew: Sons Sean Preston and Jayden James, boyfriend Jason Trawick and, as always, her bodyguard.

But was the pop princess, whose return to form officially started last week with the release of "Hold It Against Me," eyeing a Big Mac, fries and a Coke? Britney Spears and Jean-Marc Bosman. Two names you don't often see in the same sentence.

And somehow Britters might, in the manner of the Belgian footballer, and his very own wrong-place/right-time precent-setting, have unwittingly pioneered a major change in the way modern music is sold. The Top 40 could also change quite dramatically from its current state.

For those not up to speed, Spears' latest single Hold It Against Me was on international radio playlists. In most of the world, it was available to buy (No 1 on iTunes in 17 different countries) but not here.

Well, not until someone pointed out that this was somewhat ridiculous in the age of rampant downloading, legal or otherwise. Sony and Universal – the two major players – have just announced that singles will be on sale as soon as they are on air.

This "on sale = on air" shift has been, in part, also inspired by the X Factor winner Matt Cardle selling 439,000 copies of his single on the first week, which listeners could buy virtually as soon as they heard it on the telly.

It's impossible to tell precisely what effect this change – the first of its kind for more than 60 years – will have on British music. But, just for fun, let's make a few (educated) guesses.

Radio just got a lot more important
Playlists normally have six weeks to play a record before the public can get their hands on a physical copy. Searches on Google, record label high heidyins have been suggesting, peaked a fortnight before a song was released and now there is a chance they could be making more event radio from playing a song. It's an exciting sell for fans – you could be picking the next No 1 now.

So radio groups could well run more music acts
Ashley Tabor who runs Global radio (the Capital, Galaxy and Heart radio stations and others) was instrumental in the creation of boyband The Wanted. The time their next single drops on one of Ashley's stations, it will be dropping in HMV … for as long as their stores stay open.

This will suit major labels more than indies
Apart from the instant releases being their most effective way of tackling pirates short of hiring Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, the pluggers' horsetrading options ("We'll give you an exclusive on Kylie Minogue if you give us Tinie Tempah" etc.) will always put the big boys at an advantage over smaller labels with fewer acts and therefore fewer bargaining chips.

Charts will slow down
No bad thing. The chart may well become more like the iTunes chart, which fluctuates daily but ultimately has a steadier flow. The mid-1990s phenomenon of singles entering straight in the charts at No 1 before dropping like a stone will be less frequent. Blur-Oasis-style battles could well become a thing of the past. The BBC could be inclined to dust Top of the Pops off, and bring it out of retirement if the charts become a little more sensible and records hang around more as they did in the 1970s and 1980s.

It won't stop dodgy cover versions
Nothing will – but it's a step in the right direction. Recent singles, such as Shakira's She Wolf and Bruno Mars's Grenade and the Britney song inspired get-mildly-rich quick karaoke knock-off jobs. Bad karaoke will not be vanquished by this decision (how could it be when ITV make half their revenue from it?) but those bad karaoke singles bunged out to capitalise on a record's radio popularity are nearly at an end.

As radio becomes more important, the music video channels….perhaps less so
Why spend money on a video if no-one is buying the record? Companies will have an easier chance to make that call as they see quicker sales figures. If the song is out straight away, the video – which normally enjoys six weeks rotation before the tune hits shops or iTunes – becomes much less of an event.

If anticipation ahead of single releases frustrated the modern-day downloader, he or she won't have long to wait before it's a thing of the past.

The accolades keep coming in for Britney Spears' huge new single "Hold It Against Me." It remains on top of the iTunes sales chart, has been played on radio thousands of times in a week and is almost guaranteed to debut at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 this week. That would make "Hold It Against Me" only the 18th single in history to debut on top of the chart, the third in the past 12 months (Eminem's "Not Afraid" and Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" also pulled it off) and the second for Spears (her "3" debuted on top of the chart in 2009). That's an awful lot of history behind the first single from Spears' still-untitled seventh album, which could be why the readers of the MTV Newsroom Blog declared "Hold It Against Me" the best lead single of Spears' career.

In a poll that kicked off last week and closed on Monday (January 17), "Hold It Against Me" took the top spot with 34 percent of the vote. The fact that "Hold It Against Me" won is pretty impressive, as it was up against some truly killer, iconic singles. For instance, the punchy "Gimme More" took second place with 15 percent of the vote. It was followed by "...Baby One More Time" and "I'm a Slave 4 U," which each collected 12 percent.

The rest of the field included "Womanizer" (10 percent), "Oops! ... I Did It Again" (six percent), "3" and "My Prerogative" (four percent each). Interestingly, Spears' Madonna-assisted "Me Against the Music" came in last, grabbing only three percent of the vote (though the other singles from that album, 2003's In the Zone, became much bigger, including "Toxic" and "Everytime"). With "Hold It Against Me" already under her belt and making a lot of noise, expect Spears to have one of the biggest years of any artist out there — and perhaps of all time.

'I was giving [Britney] props for being #1 not dissing her at all!' the rapper wrote, responding to media reaction to his Twitter tease.

Even when Kanye West is trying to be nice, some people assume he's being mean. The rapper went onto Twitter over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday to defend himself after he said some comments he made about Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" single were misconstrued by the press.

On Friday, West posted a message — which has since been removed — that read, "Yo Britney, I'm really happy for you and I'mma let you be #1, but me and Jay-Z's single is one of the best songs of all time! LOL." He was referring to the fact that Spears' smash new single has topped the download charts in 19 countries and pushed his collabo with Jigga, "H.A.M.," down to #2 on the iTunes tally, while also lampooning his own legendary bum-rush of Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV VMAs.

Britney's manager, Adam Leber, was quick to respond with his own sarcastic quip, tweeting, "@kanyewest Thanks for 'letting' us be #1. Much appreciated."

West clarified his earlier comment a short time later, explaining, "On a serious note I'm truly happy for @AvrilLavigne and @BritneySpears...... No hate in 2011!" Which should have been the end of all that, right?

Wrong.

After watching his beloved Chicago Bears advance to within one win of the Super Bowl over the weekend, West was upset to discover that sites such as MSNBC had reposted an Us Weekly story that claimed the rap star was trying to instigate a Twitter war with Britney. Clearly stung by the insinuation that he was starting another Swift-like beef, West fought back with a string of tweets in which he scolded the media.

"I thought LOL signified a joke... I didn't get the 2011 LOL doesn't signify a joke anymore memo... In one of Kanye's most colorful metaphors for the difficulty of navigating the superstar universe (one that he perhaps should have saved for a verse in a song), he noted, "There is no astronaut training for celebrity... even though this whole life is so outer space! ... I was actually surprised that a record as raw as 'H.A.M.' could make it to #2 on iTunes ... How can u 'let' someone be number one??!! That was the whole joke!!! I know intelligent people know this so bear with me ... When I said the comment about Brittney [sic] I was giving her props for being #1 not dissing her at all! ... But stop making it seem that my aim is to hurt or down people! That's just not my style!"

He continued, "As pop stars we're all in this sh-- together! We on the inside of the TV! If the media wants to make a story ... just say I have atrocious spelling and terrible grammar ... If you don't give em a story they just make one up. I'm just trying to focus & stay creative! Keep bringing dope sh-- to the world!"

West then thanked his fans again for helping to make his latest album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, a platinum seller and praised them for giving him the power to realize his dreams, something he vowed never to take for granted. "I am an extension of my listeners," he wrote. "I won't always say the right thing but my heart is always in the right place."

Britney Spears' new single "Hold It Against Me" has dominated the airwaves like no song in its first week before. It debuted at #16 on Billboard's Pop Song chart, which monitors the amount of radio plays, with 4,071 spins, the most ever by a debuting title in the chart's 18- year history.

The track is now tied for second based on ranking with Madonna's "Ray of Light," which also entered the chart at #16 on March 7, 1998. Only Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" launched higher, at #12, the week of August 14, 1993. But again, neither of these achieved Britney's number of plays. Consequently, her track is the most-played song in its first week of this millennium.

All 130 stations tied to Billboard's chart played the song, translating to an estimated 36.4 million listeners, the 10th-highest mainstream top 40 total.

Modesto, California station KHOP led the nation with 104 plays last week. Reuters spoke with KHOP's program director MoJoe Roberts for his take on Britney's runaway success:

"Over the last decade, Britney Spears has had her ups and downs. But, every time she drops new music, it is an event for the format. We often tend to wait for audience research to come back strong to power up certain hits. This, however, is one of those rare tracks, like Katy Perry's 'California Gurls' or P!nk's 'Raise Your Glass,' that I put right into power rotation after one listen."

Roberts added, "Audience reaction to her new single has been nothing short of amazing. This is another pure pop smash from Ms. Spears."

At this point, it's a foregone conclusion by analysts that the song will debut at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 based on sales, in which case it will be the 18th single ever to do so and the third in the last year, joining Eminem's "Not Afraid" and Kesha's "We R Who We R."

"Hold It Against Me" already broke one-day records for the most spins, so it's only fitting that she break a couple of weekly records, too. If the song debuts at No.1, it'd be safe to say that this is the biggest start Britney has ever had in the lead-up to a new album. And it doesn't look like her success is going to slow down any time soon, with Adam Leber Tweeting today, "@TheDoctorLuke Never thought you and #MaxMartin would beat HIAM but I think the impossible has been achieved. Get ready world….."

No one else but Britney could single-handedly crush iTunes and radio like this without even so much as a 30 second radio interview. That's what you call true star power. The only other person that could probably do this would've been Michael Jackson, who was relentlessly pursued by the public and press despite becoming a recluse in his later years.

As forecast after its massive first-day airplay, Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" roars to a record-setting debut on Billboard's Pop Songs chart.

The first single from Spears' forthcoming ninth album storms the survey at No. 16 with 4,071 plays, the highest detections total by a debuting title in the chart's 18-year history.

"Hold It Against Me" also ties Madonna's "Frozen" (No. 16, March 7, 1998) for second-highest launch in the list's archives. Only Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" began at a higher rank, having rocketed in at No. 12 the week of Aug. 14, 1993.

The Pop Songs chart lists the most-played songs on 130 mainstream top 40 radio stations, according to Nielsen BDS.

"Hold It Against Me" received airplay on all 130 reporting stations in the chart's tracking week (Jan. 10-16). The song's first-week airplay translates to 36.4 million listener impressions, the week's 10th-highest mainstream top 40 audience total.

KHOP (@95-1)/Modesto, Calif., led all pop reporters with 104 opening-week plays.

As previously reported, the song is projected to exceed 400,000 in first-week download sales, according to industry sources.

Highlights of the Hot 100 - including the No. 1 title - will be released on Billboard.com Wednesday (Jan. 19).

All charts will be refreshed on Billboard.com Thursday (Jan. 20).
